Government snoopers, be they British intelligence agencies, police or ministries, have been responsible for more data requests of private individuals than almost any other country – according to Google.

In their annual Transparency Report the search engine noted that it had registered 1,162 requests to hand over such data, a figure which puts Britain second only to Singapore in the volume of such requests per person.

The search giant also revealed that the Briitish government had requested the removal of content on 38 separate occasions – including one appeal by the Office of Fair Trading to remove over 93,000 adverts which had been linked to fraud.

Google publishes the data in a bid to “… shine some light on the appropriate scope and authority of government requests to obtain user data around the globe.”
