Those responsible for the image of Scotland and an Ayrshire town will no doubt be going to red alert as the BBC announces that a controversial series about a Kilmarnock housing estate is about to go UK wide.

The four-part series called The Scheme followed six different families who live in Onthank a poverty- stricken estate in the East Ayrshire town.

Their chaotic lifestyles, and many shocking scenes have caused much controversy in Scotland – with Kilmarnock residents arguing the programme is edited together to create a grotesque caricature of what life is really like on the estate.

However, the BBC argues it is fair reflection of what life is really like. But whatever the argument the show has been a huge success North of the Border, despite the fact it had to be temporarily shelved after two episodes in case it prejudiced legal proceeding against individual featured who were arrested on unrelated charges.

The series has turned some of those involved into minor celebrities. One character, Marvin, who was introduced to viewers whilst waiting for his girlfriend to be released from prison is now in a position where he can sell autographed cigarettes to fans for £1 in the local Kilmarnock mall.

According to sources the BBC has now confirmed to the local community their fame – or infamy - is about to spread UK wide.
