David Cameron has rejected a call made by French president Nicolas Sarkozy for greater regulation of the internet.

Sarkozy is expected to put forward his proposals for new controls on the internet during the upcoming G8 summit.

This would see international curbs imposed on monopolies, copyright breaches and intrusions into personal privacy.

Sarkozy warned: "if technology is neutral and should remain so, the uses are not. Do not let the revolution you started undermine basic rights of individuals to privacy and to full autonomy."

The move has already been rebuffed by Downing Street however which said: “We will not be regulating the internet any time soon.”

The plan also faces similar obstruction from digital executives, notably Google.
