Samsung has become the first mobile phone manufacturer to launch a British handset with built in contactless payment technology after teaming up with Orange and BarclayCard.

The Samsung Tocco ‘Quick Tap’ augments its traditional functionality with technology that acts as a contactless credit or debit card by using a built in app.

By swiping the device past a designated terminal users can credit or debit their accounts with up to £100 so long as they don’t breach a £150 limit.

A live summary of transactions and expenditure is also provided by the device which is believed to presage a new era contactless payments.

Apple’s next iteration of its popular iPhone model is rumoured to include near field communications technology, joining a host of manufacturers with their own plans to gain a slice of the action.

Orange and Barclaycard are utilising a sim card based level of security for the new device, verifying transactions in real time.
