BBC Magazines has announced the launch of an app to follow up the release of its Man In Space 'bookazine'.

Both the bookazine and the magazine have been launched to celebrate the 50thanniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s historic first spaceflight in 1961.

The app combines all the content of the printed version of Man In Space with a host of enhanced features and interactive elements exclusive to the tablet format.

It features over 20 integrated videos with footage ranging from Gagarin’s first flight to the latest launch of Space Shuttle Discovery.

It also includes 3D views of spacecraft, 360-degree panoramic views of the Moon, images and themed photo galleries and interactive infographics.

The app has been designed and built in-house by BBC Magazines Bristol’s digital team.

“Our drive into the magazine apps market continues, this time with a one-off Sky At Night Magazine collector’s edition,” stated Rebekah Billingsley, mobile devices publisher for BBC Magazines.

“The app uses the very best in tablet functionality from stunning photography on the back-lit screen through to some incredibly exciting interactivity; it’s a must-buy for all space fans.”

The Man In Space app is now available to download from the Apple App store, priced £2.99.
