.xxx domain names go live
The first .xxx URLs have gone live, with the pornography address added to the domain name system's root servers on Friday.
Websites porn.xxx and sex.xxx have gone live as place-holders with safe-for-work generic content, while ICM Registry (the company charged with running the domain registry) has moved its site to icm.xxx and icmregistry.xxx.
First proposed 11 years ago, the .xxx suffix is a joint venture from The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the US Department of Commerce and VeriSign.
.xxx addresses are only to be made available to the adult entertainment industry, with the domain opening to the majority later in the year.
