Further arrests have been made as part of the enquiry over phone hacking at the News of the World with both the former news editor and current chief reporter being taken into custody.

The Guardian is reporting that former news editor Ian Edmondson, who was sacked by the newspaper in January following allegations over his involvement in phone hacking, and Neville Thurlbeck, chief reporter for the paper, handed themselves into police this morning and were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to tap into or hack mobile communications.

These are the first arrests made by police since beginning a fresh investigation into claims of phone hacking of celebrities and influential people by the News of the World and follows private investigator Glenn Mulcaire implicating both men through documents which were seized by police from him.

Both men are expected to be released this afternoon.

Only former royal editor Clive Goodman has been convicted as part of the scandal and was sentenced to jail alongside Mulcaire in 2007.

A spokesperson for the News of the World said that it would not be commenting on the arrests at this time.
