Census website reaches number 32 in UK as postcode info revealed

Colchester has been highlighted as the place where people were most likely to fill in their census forms this week, while Birmingham had the most online visits to the census website, which became one of the most popular sites in the UK.

According to Robin Goad, analyst for Experian Hitwise, postcode data revealed that 3.36% of market share of visits to the Census website came from Birmingham, although the ‘most prolific’ visitors per head of population were based in Colchester.

This week, the census website saw a spike in traffic of 280% on 27 March, the day the census was to be completed. This was the site become the 32nd most popular website in the UK, with people searching for information such as ‘when is the census deadline?’ to ‘Why does the government carry out the census?’

The most popular request from the last week was also for information on the census undertaken 100 years ago, with 4.75% of search terms conducted last week including the word ‘census’ and the year ‘1911’.

As well as this 0.2% of Census searches also included the word ‘Jedi’.
