In another fast switch, the Brit drops his interview with Simon Cowell and takes us back into the earthquake nightmare

Yoko recalled how she was in Tokyo with John Lennon and their son Sean, when an earthquake struck. She was terrified although "It wasn't all that bad really," she said. " I hid in a cupboard with Sean." She recalled how Japan had recovered after the devastation of World War II. Of the present tragedy, she said the Japanese people were handling it in an incredible way. "We need to be all together in spirit " They will rebuild. "For the first time we will create the sort of country the whole world will envy."

Simon Cowell will, of course, appear another night, although a stinging line from the show - his attack on Elton John, suggesting he give some of his millions to help young talent - has already been previewed on other TV stations.
