Digital analysts ComScore have revealed the ever growing dominance of Facebook on the internet after finding that European women spend one in every four minutes online on a social media site, with Facebook the portal of choice.

Men, it was found, spent one in every six minutes on such sites.

Amongst the other titbits revealed by the data is the fact that in the year between December 2009 and 2010 traffic to internet auction sites such as eBay dropped 3.6%, instant messaging was off 8% and email use amongst the under 35 demographic slipped 11%.

Search remains the number one online activity with 91% of all Europeans participating, closely followed by social networking which snares 84% of all users.

This popularity has seen a surge in display advertising on social networking platforms, which have witnessed 47% growth in the UK where the medium now accounts 41.3% of all advertising spend.
