Skype has this afternoon announced the launch of in-app advertising, which will start to appear in users' home tabs this week.

The ads, appearing initially for users in the US, UK and Germany will feature the likes of Groupon, Universal Pictures and Visa.

In a blog post, Doug Bewsher, who is Chief Marketing Officer at Skype, said the company was putting users "Skype experience first" and that users wouldn't see "annoying pop-up ads or flashy banner ads in middle of conversations".

The firm plans to show an ad from one brand per day in each of markets where advertising is being sold and promised to target users via location, gender and age to determine relevancy.

Bewsher said: "We believe that advertising, when done in the right way, will help us continue to invest in developing great products".
