Arthur Sulzberger, chairman and publisher of the New York Times today said the newspaper will create a paywall around its website.

He also revealed at the Financial Times Digital Media conference in London that the newspaper will begin to charge for its iPad app.

Sulzberger insisted that NYTimes.com, the most-read newspaper site in the world, would not see a “massive fall in drop in traffic” when the paywall is introduced.

The paper revealed plans to charge for content in early 2010, but has since remained quiet on the issue. It is understood that readers will be charged around £12.50 per month for full access.

Sulzberger said: “We're building it from the ground up so that the user experience is as good as it can be”.

It was confirmed that subscribers to the New York Times print edition will be granted full access behind its paywall with no extra charges.

Sulzberger said the newspapers iPad app was “a spectacular, great experience”, before adding that it could no longer remain free.
