Firebrand union leader Bob Crow has hit upon a novel wheeze for bringing down Britain’s staggering national debt – a tax on emails.

Speaking on Channel 4’s irreverent current affairs show, 10 O’Clock Live, Crow threw a cat amongst the pigeons by claiming that a 1p tax on emails would protect jobs whilst bringing the deficit under control.

Many in the audience agreed that Crow was taking the pee however, launching into a cascade of boo’s as he outlined his proposals.

Doubts were also raised as to the effectiveness of any such tax with no clear mechanism for payment.

The strike prone head of the militant Rail Maritime and Transport union is currently coordinating strike action by cleaners on First Great Western’s Cardiff to Swansea line.

Crow received a 12% pay rise last year, taking his total remuneration to £95k.

Up to 90% of the estimated 2.8m emails messages sent and received across the globe each second are categorised as spam.
