Be careful what you wish for! A shake-up in CNN primetime gives Piers Morgan a new challenge

Parker was the highly-rated Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker; Spitzer was Eliot Spitzer, client No 9 and former Governor of of New York before his dalliance with a prostitute was revealed.

For Spitzer, in many ways the smartest man in town, the CNN show which began four months ago, was his re-entry into the world of movers and shakers. But he and Kathleen just didn't hit it off. And rumours of behind-the-scenes squabbles culminated in the announcement this weekend of her leaving the show.

Good news for Piers? Well . . .

The Spitzer show will be renamed "In the Arena" and the former governor will take the primetime news programme in a "new direction," said the New York Post - with a format featuring nightly guests and contributors.

Hey, isn't that what Piers is doing on his show at 9 p.m? Is it possible to have too much of a good thing? One of the Brit's upcoming guests is former American idol co-judge Simon Cowell, soon to launch the X-factor in the US. Simon is well-known for dishing out tough love to would-be superstars. Perhaps, off the set, he might have a few words in the ear of Piers. PS for Piers: Better news on the ratings front - averaging around 800,000 Mon-Thurs, comfortably ahead of Larry King's 600,000 or so before he quit.
