A small town in the Australian Outback is to amend its name for a month in a bid to improve local road safety.

Speed will henceforth be known as SpeedKills in an attempt to persuade motorists to cease taking the towns name literally and apply the brakes.

One of the towns 45 residents, Phil Down, is getting into the spirit of things changing his name to, yes, Phil Slow Down instead.

It is hoped that the arresting sign will persuade drivers to slow down on the country roads but has also made a much wider impact with Facebook “fans” of the town springing up across the globe.

The initiative is the brainchild of the Victoria Transport Accident Commission which has already identified five towns in the US called Speed which it hopes will carry the SpeedKills baton.
