New York City’s Health Department has unveiled a smartphone application which directs users to the nearest free condoms, part of a drive to make the city the safest in the world in which to have sex.

All 1,000 dispensers of the rubber attachments are mapped on the devise with GPS coordinates used to direct anyone who gets lucky to the closest five.

Dr Monica Sweeney, NYC’s assistant health commissioner, launched the initiative to coincide with Valentine’s Day, she said: "We want New York City to be the safest city in the world to have sex. A lot of people come here for that.”

Responding to claims that the measure would encourage people to have sex Sweeney said: "We're not promoting sex, we're promoting safer sex."
