Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt is set to interview candidates vying for the post of chair of the BBC Trust ahead of making a decision over who he recommends as the successor for Sir Michael Lyons.

According to The Guardian, Hunt is apparently considering two names suggested by the independent selection panel following initial interviews, including former BP chief executive Lord Browne and former chief executive of ITN, professor Stewart Purvis, former Conservative party chairman Lord Patten and Sir Richard Lambert, who is set to leave his post as director general of the CBI and one more, as yet unidentified, potential candidate.

As culture secretary Hunt has the right to interview each candidate before making a recommendation, and is also allowed to introduce a ‘wild card’, but is thought unlikely to do so.

Lyons will leave the £110,000-a-year role in May.
