For those unimpressed by the technical whizzbangery of the PS3 or the in your face delights of the 3DS the altogether more innocent pleasure of an earlier age are sure to hold some appeal.

Elite, manufacturer of the ZX Spectrum (still spoken of in hallowed terms within certain circles), are to relaunch the wedge of black plastic as it approaches its 30th birthday in 2012.

The Specrum redux is being marketed as a return to the simple gameplay of yesteryear prior to the introduction of 3d graphics and smartphones.

Appearances can be deceptive though and though the rubbery keyboard looks appropriately 1984 it is very much a product of 2011 - it utilises the latest wireless Bluetooth and wifi technology.

Elite’s return to the past marks a new craze for gaming classics as the first wave of gamers hit middle age and lap up relics of their childhood.
