Sir Richard Branson and Rupert Murdoch are going head to head within the increasingly competitive iPad magazine market after Virgin announced they would be introducing a tablet exclusive title.

Virgin has imaginatively dubbed the magazine ‘Project’, stating that it will cover international culture, business and travel. It will be unveiled to the media on November 30.

Virgin’s foray follows an announcement from News Corp that they are developing an iPad newspaper, The Daily, which will be revealed in December.

The embarrassment of suitors marks a spectacular coup for a device that is not yet one year old and cements the growing belief that the future of publishing lies in digital products.

Tablet computing appears to offer publishers a means to charge for content which the public will accept, benefiting from portability, ease of use, a sense of ownership and additional features such as video and interactive graphics.

Apple has now sold 7.5m iPad’s since the device was launched in April.
