The tragic killing of newly wed Anni Dewani has taken a fresh twist after South African police reportedly suggested that her husband, Shrien Dewani, could face further questions over her death.

Mrs Dewani was abducted and shot by robbers whilst the couple were on their honeymoon in Cape Town earlier this month after the couple’s taxi took a detour through a notorious township.

Sympathy for Mr Dewani has swiftly turned to suspicion however with the victims family urging his immediate return to South Africa: “I can tell you, if it was my wife who was murdered I would jump into a plane, go there and ask those people, 'Why did you kill my wife and for what?’” Mrs Dewani’s uncle said.

Mr Dewani has enlisted one of South Africa’s top lawyers and publicist Max Clifford to defend himself, protesting that any suggestion he was involved in the crime “defies logic.” He added: “Everything about her was right for me. Why would I want to kill her?”

South African police have charged three men with murder and robbery, including the taxi driver.
