Newspaper publisher Trinity Mirror has moved to quash rumours that one of its senior executives is set to join European newspaper publisher Mecom as the successor to its recently departed chief executive David Montgomery.

Yesterday, The Sunday Times reported rumours that Mark Hollinshead, managing director of Trinity Mirror’s national divisions was set to join Mecom as Montgomery's replacement.

Former managing director of The Scottish Daily Record and Sunday Mail was promoted to his current role in 2008 and has overseen a number of cost cutting measures across the company during that period.

A spokesperson for Trinity Mirror told The Drum that there was “nothing in the story” and that any chance of Hollinshead moving to Mecom was “just speculation”.

Last week, Montgomery’s decision to ‘retire’ from the company he founded was announced, following months of boardroom turmoil surrounding its business strategy and its expansion plans into new areas.
