Hulu, an online video company, is preparing for a stock market flotation in America which could see the internet broadcaster valued at $2bn.

This war chest could allow the service provider, which shows hit films and TV programmes such as Glee and Family Guy to American viewers, to launch in Britain.

Programmes are free to view on computers but require a monthly subscription to watch on mobile devices and games consoles with revenue generated from in show advertising.

Hulu has struggled thus far to gain a toehold in the UK market with the BBC refusing to syndicate programming and no agreements yet reached with either ITV or Channel 4.

In addition existing broadcasters already hold the rights to hit American shows making it difficult for Hulu to obtain content.

Analysts believe that the service may integrate its content into Canvas, the BBC’s own video-on-demand project
