London 2012 organisers are searching for designers to create the torches that will be held by thousands of people in the two Torch Relays that will the lead the UK into the start of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The games' organising committee has teamed up with the Design Council to find a team of designers, engineers and manufacturers to create the torches.

Their torches will help more than 8,000 people carry the Olympic flame across the UK and into the Olympic Stadium where it will light the main cauldron.

The design team will create torches, cauldrons, packaging and accessories to secure the torch's safe carriage

Paul Deighton, CEO of the London Olympics organising comittee, said: "The creation of the torches to carry the Olympic and Paralympic Flame is a unique opportunity for London 2012 to literally shine a light on the UK’s best design, engineering and manufacturing talent.

"We are looking for an expert team to create the torches that will be held by thousands of people that represent the very best of our nation as the UK begins its Olympic and Paralympic celebrations with the Torch Relays in the summer of 2012.”

Interested designers can find out application details on the Compete For website.

Bristol Media has called on its city's design agencies to form a consortium and apply for the job.

In an emailed call to arms to members, it said: "Bristol is encouraging any of its design consultancies, engineering firms and manufacturers to get in touch with Bristol Media to express their interest in the project with the aim of coming together to join a Bristol design consortium to create the Olympic and Paralympic Torches for London 2012."

Mike Bennett, Bristol Media's CEO, added: "Bristol has a strong tradition of design innovation and creativity therefore it would be fantastic if we could bring together a group of interested parties and individuals to showcase our talents and register our interest in this global opportunity.”
