Nottingham agency Jupiter Creative has appointed former Halfords marketer David Clayton-Smith as non-executive chairman.

Clayton-Smith, who is also chairman of the Fair Trade Foundation, has been enlisted to help raise the retail branding agency's national profile.

He met Jupiter's MD, Jayne Mayled, when the pair worked together for Boots during the 1990s. Clayton-Smith was the retailer's marketing director while Mayled was director of communications.

Together they worked on the launch of women's shopping portal handbag.com in 1998 and in 2000 Clayton-Smith moved to Halfords where he led a corporate rebranding which picked up a D&AD award.

Clayton-Smith, who described his work at Halfords as a "career highlight, said: "Jayne recently led a management buy out of the business and I was thrilled when she invited me to take on the role of chairman.

"The agency has a well established reputation for excellent work and we will be looking to build on that further and to promote Jupiter as a one stop shop for retailers looking to enhance their branded offering... The ambition is to create a durable, sustainable and worthwhile enterprise."

Clayton-Smith is also due to become chairman of the NHS Surrey Trust from 1 May.
