Islington Mill, a former cotton spinning mill in Salford now dedicated to the arts, has been awarded £100,000 to improve its event, gallery and performance space.

The investment has come from the Central Salford Urban Regeneration company (CSURC) through Salford City Council and Arts Council England. Work will begin in May to improve public access and improve facilities for the public.

Islington Mill provides workspace for the creative industries and houses more than 50 creative entrepreneurs, a gallery space and recording studios. It hosts music gigs and exhibitions and it is hoped the renovations will allow it to increase audience numbers at its events.

Bill Campbell, the mill's owner, said: "Islington Mill has already established itself as a sustainable work space for the creative industries and we have built up a reputation as a place for alternative events and culture throughout the UK. The funding will help us to build on this and make physical improvements to the building so that we can continue to go from strength to strength.”

The funding as part of Salford City Council's plan to turn the Chapel Street area of Salford into a creative quarter.

Councillor Barry Warner, lead member for culture, said: “We are delighted to part-fund the improvements to Islington Mill, an important cultural centre which connects creative industries with students, visitors, artists and the wider community. It is a great asset to the city and key to much of the regeneration in the Chapel Street area.”
