RR Donnelley has created an exhibition that is running at the Lighthouse for Sust and The Scottish Government on creating more sustainable communities.

The overall concept of the exhibition, produced by Eastern, was to create an outdoor space inside the space provide at The Lighthouse.

The design team created this with the idea of a park, complete with grass, benches and dogs. The stands themselves were created to symbolise trees adding to the overall concept of outdoors, indoors.

Each panel was linked to a video monitor, graphics produced by Mirage Television, on the outside wall that looped through additional information on each project, these two elements were connected by colour coded lines on the floor that navigated the visitor around the exhibit.

A 'Mind map' covering the entire rear wall of the room was created from a discussion group session by architects Sam Booth of LWD Design and Ian Alexander from JM Architects which was filmed and is played back at high speed on a screen adjacent to the wall.

The Scottish Sustainable Communities Initiative (SSCI) was launched in June 2008 to encourage the creation of places, designed and built to last, where a high quality of life can be achieved.

Local authorities, landowners and the development industry were invited to submit proposals which demonstrated ambition in addressing a number of principles, leading to the design and delivery of sustainable communities, bringing about real change.

The Initiative is about creating places which go beyond single tenure housing estates, which are ambitious and inspiring. It is also about raising standards and developing skills in design, architecture and sustainable construction. It is about taking a long-term view and ultimately it is concerned with outcomes and delivering new development.

Eleven submissions were awarded recognition that they are working towards 'Creating a Scottish Sustainable Community'. These projects are in different locations across the country, represent a variety different types of development and vary in scale. Some have a focus on regeneration, others expand and support existing places, one is a completely new settlement. The exhibition has been design to show case these submissions.

RR Donnelley was also earlier commissioned to create the SSCI logo and report.
