Material Marketing has joined up with Glasgow City Council and its Determined to Succeed initiative to launch Fresh Material.

The project will aim to engage Primary 7 students across Glasgow through an event competition where groups from each Glasgow Primary School will propose an event for their school. The project will see them take the proposal through from idea creating, to project management and ultimately the production of the event for the winning school.

In addition to proposing an event idea for their school, students will put together a project team where they will also nominate individuals for various different roles. They will also propose content for the event and work on creative aspects including posters and other promotional materials.

The winning school will be selected from a shortlist of five who will come together at a judging day on 1 April at The Lighthouse in Glasgow to present their entries to an expert panel consisting of Paul Bush, chief operating officer at EventScotland, Bridget McConnell, chief executive at Culture and Sport Glasgow, Louise Martin CBE, chair of Sportscotland and vice chair of the Organising Committee for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Geoff Ellis, CEO at DF Concerts & Sera Miller managing director of Material.

Fiona Hyslop, cabinet secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “The Fresh Material project is a wonderful example of Curriculum for Excellence in action with young people being invited to pitch their ideas for an event they would like to stage at school. It is important that we encourage young people to think about all aspects of their learning, enjoy being in the classroom and discover how what they have learned is useful in the wider world. This exciting project will do just that.”

The project has been created in partnership with Glasgow City Council’s Determined to Succeed initiative under the Enterprise in Education banner. Enterprise in Education aims to shape the business people of tomorrow, and help today’s businesses enjoy a share of that success now and in the future.

Sera Miller, explained: “Fresh Material for P7 Students represents a core strand of Material’s CSR programme and represents a commitment to giving something back to the communities we operate within as well as a fantastic opportunity to work with School groups to show the creativity that working in the events industry can inspire.”
