Hyperlaunch has been appointed to design a website for author Sarah Waters – best known for her Victorian novels Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith – ahead of the release of her new book, The Little Stranger.

The Bristol-based agency was appointed by Waters' publisher, Little, Brown Book Group, to launch sarahwaters.com, which will go live at the end of March.

Hyperlaunch's brief is to design and build a content-rich, visually and typographically strong website as well as capturing e-mail addresses for use in newsletters.

Waters' next novel, The Little Stranger, which is released in June, is set post-second world war and the website will be expected to complement both this genre of her writing and the Victorian style she is familiar for.

Hyperlaunch's Jon Morgan said: “We’ll be going for a clean simple design, making the main focus of the design the books themselves. A lot of effort goes into the books’ covers so we’ll be bringing these to life with striking 3D illustrations combined with classical fonts set against a pale background.

“We’ll also be creating a library of her work where users can select a book and read associated extracts and reviews - with chapters from The Little Stranger in the run up to the novel’s launch.”

Waters has gained fans from her books - Tipping the Velvet, Affinity and Fingersmith – being made into TV adaptations. The website will include short clips and trailers from the TV programmes.

Bobby Nayyar, marketing manager for Little, Brown Book Group, said: “Sarah has a notable presence on the web and a dedicated fan base, which we aim to grow in 2009. A key part of our plan is to release exclusive extracts on the website in the weeks prior to The Little Stranger’s launch.

“The aesthetics of the site are also key – and the site will be stylish, accessible and rich with content.”
