Publishing giant, Trinity Mirror has announced plans to cut eight of its free weekly newspapers in the Midlands.

The eight loss-making publications scheduled to shut down include the Derby Trader, Ilkeston Trader, Ripley Trader, Belper Bugle, Peterborough Herald and Post, Stamford Herald and Post, Whittlesey Standard, and Deepings Standard.

The decision could see as many as 23 people made redundant, with consultation ongoing with those employees affected.

Trinity maintained its commitment to the region and said the Midlands division will refocus attention on its remaining portfolio of weekly newspapers, adding that it had no plans to close any other publications.
