Almost half of SMEs in the North West do not use marketing agencies due to cost and previous experiences of mixed success, according to a new survey.

The research commissioned by Preston-based agency NXO and carried out by a team of MBA students from UCLan identified that 49 per cent of SMEs in the region didn\'t use any external agencies and that only 48 per cent of SMEs felt marketing was crucial. T

he results of the survey also show highlighted that there are 4.3 million SMEs in the UK with a combined annual turnover of £1,400billion.

The research concluded that SMEs do no fit traditional marketing theories or framework and that each unique characteristic of an SME, including those of the entrepreneur, will have an impact on any marketing undertaken.

Philip Dyer, chairman of NXO, commented: \"SMEs want sound strategic thinking and advice that most provincial or tactically based agencies cannot offer.”
