Guardian Media Group has bolstered its portfolio of radio stations with the purchase of GCap’s Century stations in the north east and north west.

The deal means GMG now owns a total of seven regional stations across the UK, making it number four in the market.

Julian Carter, GMG’s radio sales director, said the deal was not as simple as just buying the stations.

“GMG radio sales, based in Manchester, will sell to regional advertisers, but GCap will continue to sell Century,” he told The Drum. “Advertisers and agencies won’t see any difference. We have ambitions to be in the top three in the UK.”

The combined price of the Century deal is £60 million.
