The Sun has, as predicted, taken over the Daily Record as Scotland’s best-read newspaper.

The ABC results, released today, show that the Daily Record sold 384, 378 copies, while it’s rival The Scottish Sun sold 393,953 copies – a difference of 9,575.

However, the Daily Record was quick to react to the figures claiming that The Scottish Sun’s position at the top would only be temporary. A spokesman for the Daily Record said: “The Sun in Scotland’s position is temporary and cannot be maintained at full cover price – if they raised the price their sales would fall dramatically.

“If the Record was at 10p it would be selling around 550,000 copies, but we are not in the business of artificially inflating our sale by renting readers through price-cutting. We will not squander operating profit on such short term measures.”
