Sigma Communications has been appointed to handle public relations and marketing for the Samaritans in Scotland.

It is the first time the charity has appointed an agency to work specifically in Scotland.

The campaign will focus on raising the organisation’s profile with both callers and potential volunteers.

In particular the charity will be encouraging more young people to turn to Samaritans for emotional support, through its roll-out of the email-based service. jo@samaritans.org .

“Samaritans do a superb job in Scotland with 20 branches offering confidential support to thousands of people each year,” said Ryan Smith, a director at Sigma Communications. “Although the charity is already very well known the public are not fully aware of the range of services provided and new ways of reaching out to young people need to be explored. A key tool in achieving this will be PR.”

Stephen Douglas, regional publicity officer, Samaritans in Scotland said: “We were impressed by Sigma’s level of creativity and proven ability to achieve high quality press coverage in both the national and consumer press. They have put together an impressive campaign for the next few months and we look forward to rolling this out to the Scottish media.”
