Kemp: a career which spanned over 40 years.

Arnold Kemp, former deputy editor of the Scotsman and former editor of the Herald, has died this week while on holiday in the Republic of Ireland.

Mr Kemp, aged 63, suffered a heart attack whilst out walking near his cottage in Connemara, where he was staying with his partner, Anne Simpson.

He joined the Scotsman as a sub-editor in 1959. Then after a brief stint in his hometown of London, with the Guardian, he rejoined the Scotsman as production editor in 1967 and was made deputy editor in 1972. He was appointed editor of the Herald in March 1981 and held the post for 14 years.

Gordon Young, publisher of The Drum, said: “Arnold was one of the great Scottish editors of our time. His untimely demise was a terrible shock and he will be greatly missed by the entire newspaper industry.”
