The appearance of Liam Kane, the former managing director of the Herald and the Daily Record, at SMG's Renfield Street offices last week has sparked some speculation that he could be set to acquire the Herald.

Speculation about the sale of the broadsheet has been heightened in recent weeks after numerous newspaper reports that SMG could be broken up and sold off in a bid to stave off debts and secure a return for shareholders.

A source close to the Herald said: "Liam was here last week, but what he was doing here nobody really knows. I suppose it would not be such a far fetched notion for him to be interested in him raising the money to buy the Herald."

Des Hudson, chief executive of publishing at SMG, was unavailable to comment on the speculation.
