Storing and computing data creates more CO2 emissions than the aviation industry, so Electrolux has created a World Wide Vac to help people clean their digital dust.

The free web tool was created with the purpose of helping people clean their personal clouds. The widget analyses your inbox to identify irrelevant e-mails, with users having the ability to choose how heavily they want to cleanse their inbox.

It is estimated that each email has a carbon footprint of four grams of CO2 over its lifetime, with people generally keeping thousands of emails.

Marcus Claesson, chief information officer at Electrolux, said: “Considering online space as infinite easily turns us into digital hoarders – saving everything, throwing away nothing. Google is doing an amazing job at the forefront of environmentally smart and efficient data storing. This is our way of contributing from the other end, helping people to clean their personal clouds in a simple way.”

The tool, currently in beta, launched with a focus on Gmail, Google’s web mail service with more than 425 million users worldwide.
