Twitter users have come out in force to parody a comical front page headline in today’s Daily Mail, which decries the inability of the British population to craft a humble sandwich.

The lunchtime favourite hit the headlines following news that a UK producer of pre-packaged varieties of the delicacy was being forced to recruit hundreds of workers from Eastern Europe to keep production lines rolling, feeding the papers immigration slant.

Patriotic tweeters were swift to offer their services to a nation imperilled by cooking up their own twists in the tried and tested two slice formula; incorporating fillings ranging from a mug of coffee and stack of DVDs to a slightly confused pet dog.

The novel gerbil filler may be a tad raw and frisky for some palates.

Some sandwich suggestion were, frankly, bananas:

Karla George gets top marks for effort with this egg sandwich, going the extra mile to procure free range produce.
