Tesco's flaccid performance continues with ‘free erections’ translation fail

Tesco’s torrid spell shows no sign of abating after Britain’s dominant retailer was hit by another cock-up, literally.

A translation error at one of the supermarket chain’s Welsh stores saw a cash machine offer customers an unusual extra service with people offered ‘free erections’ in addition to the more prosaic ‘cash withdrawal’, ‘balance statement’ and ‘PIN services’ functionality.

The blunder stemmed from an attempt to translate a sign reading ‘free money’ into Welsh for the Aberystwyth store, a phrase which should read ‘arian am ddim’. Unfortunately what was actually printed was ‘codiad am ddim’ – with a rather more salacious meaning.

Local councillor Ceredig Davies said: “There were a few titters in the town so I went to have a look. Ten out of ten to Tesco for considering the Welsh language but perhaps they should have had it checked by an actual Welsh speaker.”
