From the audacity of the work on display to the casual dress code and the poke of chips on arrival, the Chip Shop Awards has always been a little different to your average advertising awards ceremony.

And what happened at the start of this year’s Chip Shops bash is unlikely to be repeated at the more sober Cannes Lions or D&AD soirées any time soon.

Just as the Chip Shops forgoes black-tie formality and a stuffy three-course dinner, this year The Drum's managing director of events, Lynn Lester, also decided to do away with the traditional welcome speech.

Instead, on a night all about recognising creativity at its boldest, our brave awards host decided to sing for her supper.

The Chip Shops crowd may be accustomed to shock advertising, but it is fair to say Lynn’s unique take on Plan B’s ‘She Said’ – delivered with some reworked lyrics and a dose of rap straight outta Clydebank – caught everyone unawares.

Host venue the Ministry of Sound has seen many musical performances down the years, but probably none quite like this…
