Sainsbury’s apologises following Twitter backlash for slave clothes display

To celebrate the launch of 12 Years a Slave on DVD, the Heyford Hill store of Sainsbury’s dressed a mannequin in torn clothes. The clothes, similar to those worn on the cover of the film by the main character, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, featured a sticker saying ‘new’.A picture of the display was posted on Twitter by a shopper, prompting outrage online. Sainsbury’s has now apologised and issued the following statement: “We can only apologise. It’s been taken down and clearly should never have gone up in the first place.”
