Golden Wonder has launched a social media campaign on the back of research that suggested Brits bin 5.8 million potatoes every day.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn that 320,000 tonnes of potatoes are thrown away each year. That’s the equivalent of 9.8 billion bags of glorious Golden Wonder crisps! As the makers of such blinking marvellous snacks, it is our responsibility, nay DUTY to find a new path to fulfilment for these cast offs,” said a spokesman on the dedicated Root Camp website.

Devised by Bottle, the activity is encouraging people 'register' their unwanted potatoes for Root (vegetable) Camp by tweeting @GoldenWonderUK using the hashtag #RootCamp.

“Our Crisp Cadets will receive full training on the technical requirements of being a crisp, including crunch factor and bag diving etiquette, as well as psychometric testing to establish whether they are best suited to a classic flavour such as Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion, or something a little more specialist like HP Sauce or Tomato Ketchup."

The activity is running across both the brand's Facebook and Twitter feeds.
