Globally-loved Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie are pictured cuddling on the couch in front of the TV on the New Yorker’s DOMA cover.

Marking the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act in California, which prevented same-sex marriage, the New Yorker used illustrator Jack Hunter’s striking image to front its July issue.

“It’s amazing to witness how attitudes on gay rights have evolved in my lifetime,” Hunter told The New Yorker. “This is great for our kids, a moment we can all celebrate.”
