With the first episode of season three of Game of Thrones being aired in the UK on 1 April, it was found that the Twitter buzz for the series reached almost one million tweets.

Research carried out by Socialbakers found that 926,547 tweets were sent, with six per cent of these coming from the UK; while 20 per cent came from the US and 16 per cent from Canada.

Socialbakers found that on social media, Game of Thrones had almost 5.5 million ‘fans’, with five per cent of these coming from the UK and 34 per cent from the US.

Socialbakers CEO Jan Rezab said: “There is obviously the desire from the US for people to connect to their favourite programs and show that they are fans. So, it’s important that companies, which produce content, consider social media when launching formats. Monitoring the social media landscape could be a useful tool to generate buzz and keep the series top of mind. It's also a way to gauge the popularity of characters and act as a guide of how to best feature them in their marketing mix.”
