A Facebook campaign has been underway for the past month, calling for Father Dougal to be promoted from his duties in Craggy Island to take on the role of Pope.

The Facebook page has gathered over 16,000 likes, since Pope Benedict XI announced his retirement.

Father Dougal (played by actor Ardel O’Hanlon) backed the campaign, saying: "This is great! Obviously very excited. Had no idea I was in the running, to be honest.”

"If I am made Pope the first thing I will do is make Sunday a recognised day of worship. Hurray!"

According to Facebook, he is the top man for the job as "nobody else could concentrate so hard on looking so holy than Father Dougal McGuire himself".

Dougal now just needs to wait for the phone to ring, as Cardinals began voting for the new Pope today, 12 March.
