Choose Community: Hackney Wick FC
giffgaff’s very foundations lie in community.
This is why Choose Community exists: together with giffgaff’s Head of Social Layla West, we created a campaign that shines a light on small communities and the people who build them.
We rolled it out in September 2018 and it was then that we first met Bobby Kasanga, the man behind Hackney Wick FC. We interviewed him in an old pie and mash cafe in East London and were impressed with how selfless and kind he is.
Fast forward to this spring when we all planned giffgaff’s Father’s Day campaign. We all wanted to create something that felt true to the brand and celebrated not just biological dads, but the father figures who work tirelessly to make a change. Who better than the man who turned his own life around to provide opportunities to kids who don’t get that many?
Bobby launched Hackney Wick FC upon his release from prison. The goal was to battle peer pressure, tackle gang influences and provide kids and young adults with a better alternative and to make them feel part of their community.
We followed Bobby and Hackney Wick FC around for a day. We watched their football practice, talked about how important the sport is and the impact it has on the community.
In true giffgaff ethos that big isn’t always better, it’s a film shot with a five-person crew; one of whom was running with an umbrella after the camera operator during rain. Good content doesn’t have to be a complicated affair.
