Swipe Right for Date Night
Developing Australia’s first dating app and TV Show
Over the last year, we worked alongside Screentime Australia, a Sydney-based specialist television production company and part of the Banijay Group, to develop Australia’s first dating app to create a live TV dating show.
We created the app to fundamentally drive the format of the reality TV show, giving people who are passionate about finding their match access to ‘swipe right’ and potentially end up on the nationally broadcasted contemporary dating show.
The app complemented the reality show about the modern dating experience that followed people as they played the dating game with their phones and friends, swiping left and right and eventually going on dates with their matches. The added layer to the show was the “Goggle Box” style viewing, where friends and family would watch the dates and commentate in a hilarious fashion.
In an Australia-first, bringing the world of online dating and television together in a sweet marriage, the Date Night app uses traditional swiping mechanism, features in-app messaging, sound effects and a search functionality designed to help singledom’s find their ideal partner by location, age and preferences, whilst providing tight security and monitoring solutions.
Date Night premiered on Channel 9 with over half a million viewers, a following that grew throughout the series.
Working with clients from healthcare to government-funded games and apps this perfectly complemented our experience creating apps and websites for shows such as Home & Away, Downton Abbey, Offspring, Powerpuff Girls, and Sherlock.
We enjoyed developing this exciting project in collaboration with Screentime with a heavily compressed deadline and demanding capabilities around response times for large traffic loads.
“Working relentlessly against a tight deadline to get the project off the ground and ready for market, The Project Factory (digital development arm of Way To Blue) worked tirelessly to develop, monitor and service on both Android and iOS supported devices.
“With the upmost professional and proficient work displayed with such a sunny disposition, both directly and when dealing with third parties on this project, the team are what we call the gold one-stop shop, completing all tasks above and beyond whilst under pressure and providing meaningful consultation. This partnership allowed us to create more than a television series, but a franchisee to engage with Australian audiences on a digital platform.”
Screentime has also created such shows as Anh’s Brush with Fame, Todd Sampson’s Life On The Line, Underbelly And Janet King.
It was a brilliant experience to work on such a unique territory-first project alongside such a wonderful team; we can’t wait for what’s next!
