How have you found business development over the last 12 months?

Working within the sports and lifestyle sector, business development has remained on a fairly even footing. Whilst budgets might be a little harder to secure across the marketing industry sponsorship seems to have held firm and the rise of experiential and the 'experience economy' has been particularly visible with brands looking to create meaningful experiences around sporting events.

What have been your highlights over the last year?

Whilst there have been a handful of new wins across the two agencies I have worked for in the last year, my overall highlight has to be joining rEvolution, an agency that is growing rapidly and isn't afraid to back the Business Development team.

What do you think is the most important trait of a successful business developer?

It is difficult to pin this down to just one trait, but I have always thought that perseverance is vital in Business Development (and in career progression in general). That said, having a macro view of the industry is also vital. Being able to see how the shifting sands of the marketing world are going to affect clients/prospects means you can provide the best advice and target the right prospects at the right times.

What one thing is vital to you doing your job effectively?

Who has been the biggest influence to you over the last 12 months and why?

It would probably have to be my former MD at Synergy, Lisa Parfitt. The faith and backing that she offered when I came into the role, having been self-employed for 6 years, made the transition much easier.

What is your secret to success?

Don't neglect any avenue to get your agency noticed. It isn't possible to be everywhere all the time but you can try your best to be.

How do you unwind after a busy day of new business?

Keeping fit is hugely important to me and, naturally, playing sport is how I do that. The two I still keep up are football and indoor climbing.
