Tommy’s launches new support app built by digital agency Tangent

Leading UK pregnancy charity Tommy’s is launching a new information and support app for parents of premature babies this week.

Tommy’s is the largest charity funding research into the causes of premature birth, miscarriage and stillbirth, which provides information and support for parents-to-be through any pregnancy journey. 60,000 babies are born prematurely each year in the UK, so many families commonly but quietly endure the extreme anxiety and uncertainty that it can bring.

The charity appointed digital agency Tangent in November 2020 with the task of completely redeveloping their existing app. To do this, Tangent’s cross-disciplinary team of strategists, designers and developers worked together to bring the new app in line with Tommy’s overarching mission of giving both practical and emotional support to all parents.

Available for free on iOS and Android devices, the new app offers a personalised, supportive experience for parents with useful features and comprehensive information to help them throughout their journey, from finding out they’re at risk of premature birth to spending time in hospital and bringing their baby home.

These features include:

- Personalised content delivered week by week as their pregnancy progresses

- Diary entries to remember special moments that can be easily shared with family and friends through WhatsApp or social media

- Mood tracking for parents, as premature birth can increase the risk of mental health issues such as postnatal depression

- Weight logs for the baby, to track their development once they’re born

- Feeding logs and reminders, so parents can monitor their baby’s needs

- Access to Tommy’s latest research and findings into premature birth

- Impartial expert information from Tommy’s midwives

- Real life stories from other prem parents so they feel part of the Tommy’s community

The team has shown huge commitment to the project, and to the parents, creating a supportive and personalised app that will help many families.”

Beyond the app launch, Tangent will continue to work with Tommy’s on a digital product campaign in partnership with M&S.

Working with a tight budget in the third sector, this was a unique opportunity for the Tangent team to design and build an app that could truly make a positive impact on people's lives.

The team are committed to going the extra mile— the designer from Tangent who worked on the app even ran for Team Tommy’s at the London Marathon earlier this year.
