British Airways: saying farewell to the Queen of the Skies
Marking the moments that matter the most to BA
The day when the last remaining fleet of BA’s Boeing 747s at London Heathrow were being retired was fast approaching, and the team at BA knew that they could not let the occasion pass by without the appropriate commemoration. That’s when they came to us.
Starstruck facilitated the live capture and broadcast of the departing aircraft, giving the world the opportunity to share in this piece of BA history in the making. Coordinating a live broadcast on the runway of Europe’s busiest airport was no small feat and technologically complex, but we rose to the occasion and met the fleet and BA team bright and early to film the emotional takeoff scheduled for precisely 7.47am.
Our strategy of live broadcast meant having the perfect medium to both celebrate and revere the Queen of the Skies, transforming a BA moment into a national moment. This was BA’s first ever Facebook Live event, and the audience reached an incredible 338K. The story was covered by the BBC, Sky News and ITV News, who carried our live coverage on air during the morning bulletin.
Being trusted with an event of such emotional significance in a brand’s history is always a privilege. Against a backdrop of the devastating effects of the pandemic to the aviation industry, Starstruck were able to elevate this farewell to reaching new audiences on new platforms, reminding everyone for a day of the romance of air travel.
