Who are the real winners of Gamescom 2020?

by Samuel Whitehead

September 1, 2020

Gamescom 2020 highlights.

Gamescom has officially wrapped up its digital event, leaving behind an immense trail of announcements, trailers and gameplays from the worlds most anticipated games.

With big console reveals looming later this year, 2020’s Gamescom experience held more anticipation than ever before, despite the unfortunate circumstances.

Available to livestream, no one had to miss out on the gaming festivities. Although, never deterred from a challenge the team at Kairos created our very own virtual Gamescom in Minecraft to replace the real thing. The build is immense! Explore the central hall, main stage, meet greet areas, various places to relax and even the toilets if you must! The map is completely free to check out and download, so please do, as it's an amazing achievement. However, whilst you explored our virtual Gamescom in Minecraft, we’ve gathered our highlights from this year's digital show.

What trailers/ gameplay trailers managed to stand out from the crowd?

Gamescom is all about new content, reveals and developer interviews. A memorable trailer doesn’t necessarily mean a good game, but a bad one can unquestionably have a lasting impression. These are our highlights of trailers and interviews for Gamescom 2020:

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – Official Perseus briefing cinematic trailer wow’s viewers…

Call of Duty’s latest title “Black Ops Cold War” may have been this year’s worst kept gaming secret. However, after Call of Duty’s initial announcement a few days ago, Gamescom offered another chance to witness more Black Ops Cold War material. There’s no doubt, 2020’s entry looks epic, especially President Ronald Regan. We simply can’t wait to play.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga - Gameplay Trailer. Release date delayed but next generation confirmed

Lego Star Wars is back! This time, it’s the entire Skywalker Saga. The bad news… Its release date has been pushed back to Spring, 2021. Coronavirus hasn’t been kind to many in the gaming world and even Lego Star Wars must make sacrifices. Despite this, the new trailer looks awesome. We challenge anyone to not have a tear in their eye watching decades of Star Wars moments play out in the Lego’s signature style. Undoubtedly, Lego’s special brand of humour has kept its charm and it’s been confirmed the game will be arriving on both next gen consoles.

Star Wars were on a role at Gamescom…The Sims 4: Star Wars Journey to Batuu Trailer

The new Sims 4 update is out of this galaxy. Excuse the awful pun. But yes… Star Wars is coming to Sims 4. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait long, as the release date is not far far away. September 8th to be precise. Ultimately, the expansion may fall into the category of ‘things I didn’t know I needed’ but for the majority, it’s different enough to warrant a great deal of interest.

Star Wars Squadrons trailer captures imagination on opening night

A major focus of night one, was Star Wars Squadrons. Some classic faces have returned from previous games including Wedge, Sloane and Hera. Not only that, beloved film character Princess Leia makes an appearance. EA really seems to be taking advantage of their ownership rights, with two big Star Wars announcements. Why shouldn’t they? It looks fantastic.

Dragon Age 4 First Look and Behind-The-Scenes Trailer

Dragon Age 4 is only in the infancy of production. However, many fans see this entry as a make or break title for the developers, BioWare. Nevertheless, the team at BioWare were excited to speak about their latest game in the franchise. Without a doubt, the initial look at concept art and in-development footage shows promise. Can the magic of Dragon Age: Origins return? We most certainly hope so.

8 minutes of uninterrupted Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart gameplay, excited fans…

Some of the most impressive gameplay came from the developers at Insomniac Games, who showed off their latest edition to the Ratchet & Clank franchise: “Rift Apart”. Coming to the PS5 on launch, the game's graphics look beautiful. Furthermore, the seamless transitions and immersive cut scenes offered a stunning insight into what these next generation consoles are capable of. A definite win for PS5 in the console wars!

Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods trailer and interview impressed

There has been a lot of hype for the new Doom Eternal expansion. But the important question is: did the trailer thrill fans? Most certainly. The expansion, named “The Ancient Gods”, boasted a trailer and trailer breakdown with Hugo Martin. It’s safe to say, the fans were won over.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 remastered; interview reignites excitement

Everyone was excited when Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 was announced to be remastered. Undoubtedly, the hype has continued after the developer interview with Andy Gentile at Gamescom 2020. The nostalgia will be unparalleled and there’s not long to wait now till its September 4th release date.

Sea of Thieves – Dev Gameplay Update, now includes dogs!

What’s new to Sea of Thieves? Dogs. Need we say anymore?

Honourable mentions…

We have mentioned some extremely exciting titles. However, there’s a lot to keep track of at Gamescom. These are some honourable mentions of other great trailers and moments from Gamescom, that also deserve your attention:

GhostRunner, Medal of Honour: Above and Beyond, Destiny 2: Beyond Light, Fall Guys Season 2, Unknown 9: Awakening, Aragami 2, Little Nightmares 2, World of Warcraft Shadowlands, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about time – Interview and WWE 2K Battlegrounds let’s play with Austin Creed.

In summary…

Despite Gamescom’s unusual digital presentation, there was much to be excited about from this year’s event. No news yet on next generation console prices, however. Something many hoped to be announced. Despite the limitations of a digital event, with no physical interaction or fans, gamescom hosted a brilliant experience. Gamescom will hopefully be back to normal next year but until then, stay safe and continue to enjoy the platitude of gaming titles coming in the near future.
